Scope of Practice

The scope of practice of a Physician Associate varies depending on the clinical setting which includes acute hospital settings, surgical and medical specialties, GP practice and private practice. PAs function with a delegate autonomy that is established by the supervising doctor.


Physician Associates are trained but not limited to do the following tasks:

  • Take patient histories

  • Perform physical examinations

  • Execute management plans

Physician Associates in Ireland are currently not authorised to carry out the following:​

  • Prescribe medications

  • Order imaging involving ionising radiation
