Scope of Practice
The scope of practice of a Physician Associate varies depending on the clinical setting which includes acute hospital settings, surgical and medical specialties, GP practice and private practice. PAs function with a delegate autonomy that is established by the supervising doctor.
Physician Associates are trained but not limited to do the following tasks:
Take patient histories
Perform physical examinations
Execute management plans
Physician Associates in Ireland are currently not authorised to carry out the following:
Prescribe medications
Order imaging involving ionising radiation
